What to bring
Essentials (in addition to your regular bird hunting kit):
-
Camouflage - is a must. Advantage Wetland, Fall Flight, Shadow Grass are all good pattern, money well spend would be on new camo
-
White Coveralls for snow/speck hunting
-
Snow/Canada/Speck goose calls - Big River calls are easy to blow. The snow goose goose call is essential, because the more calls in the spread the better. Time well spend will be on how to operate a goose call. Audio tapes are available and hunters should become proficient with a Canada, and Snow goose call. Be advised that the guide may be temporarily away from the action (retrieving or spotting); therefore there may be times in which you are expected to do your own calling in which you should be able to blow you own goose or duck call.
-
Face masks - I rank this is an important piece of equipment. I think its well worth the cost. Bring both white and camouflage facemasks.
-
Cooler - If you are planning on taking birds home, you must bring a cooler, or make arrangements well in advance so we can purchase one for you. We recommend a large collapsible soft fabric cooler.
-
Ammunition - Can be coordinated with our local supplier's or we may order it for you. Expect to shoot a minimum of 2-3 boxes a day. We suggest BB's for geese and #3 shot for ducks. Note: ammunition is more expensive in Canada than in the USA.
You are more than welcome to bring your retriever with you, however there are rules:
-
All dogs must sleep in their kennels and are not let loose on their own
-
No dogs are allowed on the main level of the lodge
-
Dogs that are not house trained remain outside in their kennel
-
All dogs must be leashed. Uncontrollable dogs will have to remain in their kennel
-
Hunters booking in mixed group are not allowed to bring their dog
-
All group members must agree to want to hunt with the dog
Additional Recommendations (in addition to your regular bird hunting kit):
-
Coffee thermos
-
Hip Waders
-
Calls - Canada, Speck, Snow goose + duck calls (learn to use them)
-
Shotgun plug. - for semi automatics, you are only allowed 3 rounds in the gun, 1 in the chamber and 2 in the mag
-
Rain gear
-
Dog Kennel
-
Travel arrangements can be made through various recommended travel agencies
-
Go to a sporting clay range and do some practice shooting prior to your trip. many hunters, have not used their gun for a year, a little bit of practice will go a long way
