Maddhatter Guides and Outfitting

Introduction

Maddhatter Guides and Outfitting is licensed as an outfitter through Saskatchewan Environment, Lic# 2008. Our outfitting area is approximately 3000 square miles, in which we only outfit for waterfowl. Ducks Unlimited has several large projects and refuges developed in our area.

Hunting Overview

Our primary focus is waterfowl. During the period above, we do not outfit for any other game, so that the waterfowl hunt receives all of our focus and attention. We goose hunt in the mornings and duck/goose hunt in the afternoons. Our camp camp is primarily a goose camp where 75% of our hunts are for geese. Our goose hunts are field hunts over decoys and our afternoon duck/goose hunts are usually in the field, but occasionally over water. We hunt all Canada goose species including the great honkers, along with Snows and Speckle bellies. We hunt an assortment of duck species, with the majority being Mallards.

We have a large number of permanent and seasonal water-bodies which are interspersed with farmland where both cereal and legume crops are grown in abundance. We are fortunate to be some of the first hunters to hunt the fall migrants as they head south for the winter. The combination of excellent wetland habitat, vast grain-fields and south bound migrants make our water fowling some of the best in North America.

Species

The primary Species that hunters come to Saskatchewan for are Canada Goose, Snow & Blue Goose, Ross Goose and the White Fronted Goose which is also known as a Speckle belly. There are also many species of ducks as Mallards, Blue / Green Winged Teals, Pintails, Widgeons, Northern Shoveler's, Gadwalls, Redheads, Scaup and Canvasbacks.

Geese

Our morning shoots are usually field shoots for Geese with the afternoon shoot for ducks or snow geese, depending on what looks the best. We hunt both the Greater and lesser Canada Goose. Snow Geese along with the "Blue" variation and the Ross Goose are in abundance. Every group, will shoot white Fronted "Speckle belly" Geese although we shoot the least of this species.

Ducks

We usually hunt ducks and snow geese in the afternoons, but often ducks are shot in the mornings over the goose decoy too. Our duck shoots are primarily in the field, with the occasional shoots on and over water. Our primary focus is Mallards, along with other Dabbler species which include Pintails, Gadwalls, Widgeons, Teals, and Northern Shoveler's. We rarely shoot Divers, but when we do they may be Redheads, Canvasbacks, Scaup's, Ring Necks, golden eyes, and Buffleheads.

Sand hill Cranes

They do migrate through the area, and we hunt them as opportunities present themselves.

Season Weather

Fall weather can be unpredictable. Be sure to bring some warm insulated clothing, boots, gloves, face mask. Due to unpredictable weather, Maddhatter Guides and Outfitting reserves the right to change hunt plans according to the weather.

For example, after a snow/rainstorm, we may not be field shooting because we will be pass shooting, or duck hunting along a slough.
